SEBI has played a really important role in regulating the capital markets and in the development of our overall economy.If you see the market value of NSE-listed companies combined together, it stands at Rs 92,09,386 crore as on January 2016 as compared to Rs 3,63,350 crore as on 1994-1995 (as shown in the chart below) SEBI is managed by members consisting of chairman (nominated by Government of India), a member from RBI, 2 officers from finance ministry and 5 members nominated by Indian government (3 being the whole time members). The objectives of SEBI are: To monitor and regulate the stock market activities and developing intermediaries code of conduct. SEBI is a market regulator which tries to create a balance in the day to day stock market activities and for this there are regulatory frameworks established by SEBI. There are 17 exchanges currently operational in India and all exchanges, including NSE and BSE are regulated by SEBI guidelines. The function of SEBI is also to develop and promote activities to enhance business in stock exchanges. These include: Conducting and promoting training programs for intermediaries. It was initially established as a non-statutory body, i.e. it had no control over anything but later in 1992, it was declared an autonomous body with statutory powers.
